Rewilding Rotorua: The CCTs Mission to Restore Okoheriki.

Nestled in the heart of New Zealand, the Dansey Road Scenic Reserve stands as a testament to the beauty and resilience of untouched native ecosystems. This pristine 470-hectare forest, home to ancient trees and a myriad of native species, is the focal point of the Canopy Conservation Trust's ambitious rewilding efforts.

The Canopy Conservation Trust, a collaborative initiative between Rotorua Canopy Tours and the Department of Conservation, aims to restore and protect this unique habitat. Our mission is to create a pest-free environment across 470 hectares of the reserve, enabling native plants and birds like the kiwi, kōkako, and saddleback to thrive once more.

A Sanctuary for Native Species

The DRSRs untouched status is a rare jewel in New Zealand's natural heritage. Its preservation is crucial for the survival of many native birds, invertebrates, reptiles, and fungi that call this forest home. Unlike many other forests, this reserve has never been logged, maintaining its integrity and providing a sanctuary where the ecosystem has remained remarkably intact for thousands of years.

However, introduced predators such as rats, stoats, and possums have taken a toll on the native bird populations. Nationally, New Zealand has lost over 40% of its bird species to extinction. We are dedicated to reversing this damage through translocation projects, extensive pest eradication programs, and education. By removing these threats, we are working to restore the natural balance and bring back the vibrant birdlife that once filled the air with song.

Community Involvement and Education

The success of our initiatives relies heavily on community involvement and education. Public support and awareness are key components of our strategy. Through educational programs and community events, we aims to foster a deeper understanding of conservation issues and inspire individuals to take action both in the reserve and in their own backyards.

Achieving Self-Sufficiency

Financial sustainability is another critical aspect of our plan. Rotorua Canopy Tours has committed to financially support our activities through a portion of ticket sales, however this is by no means enough. By the end of 2024, the goal is to become as self-sufficient as possible through public donations and sponsorships.

Join the Restoration Effort

The Canopy Conservation Trust invites everyone to be a part of this restoration journey. Whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word, every contribution helps bring us closer to a thriving, bird-filled Dansey Road Scenic Reserve. Visit our Take Action page to learn more about how you can get involved and make a difference.

Together, we can restore this natural treasure and ensure that future generations experience the beauty and diversity of New Zealand's native forests.
